Singapore: A City of Many Flavors

Singapore’s food scene is characterized by a dizzying, dazzling diversity. Take your tastebuds on a trip by ticking off an array of flavors – Chinese, Malay, Eurasian and Indian culinary traditions can be sampled everywhere, from hawker street-stall centers selling mee goreng and oyster omelets to elegant restaurants plating up swish, modern creations.

In 2017, the city is hosting the inaugural Singapore Cocktail Week, showing that there’s a lot more to Singapore’s drinks list than the famous Singapore Sling (best sipped at the place where it was invented, Raffles Hotel). Barflies should make a beeline for one of the city’s characterful laneway cocktail bars. Bar Moosehead, set in a pre-war shophouse a few minutes away from Telok Ayer MRT Station, is popular with locals. Alternatively, hit one of the ravishing rooftop oases: Ce La Vi, on the 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands, is an iconic start.

Of course, while you’re here, you’ll need to visit a hawker market (food court), so as to canter through an array of local dishes, including chicken rice, fried char kway teow (flat noodles), hokkien mee (shrimp noodles), bak kut teh (pork ribs in broth), satay, laksa, chilli crab and yong tau fu (stuffed tofu). The Chinatown Complex Food Center will give you a good general introduction to Singapore’s street-food scene; the Old Airport Road Food Center is another winner (don’t miss the soya beancurd stalls).
